Vintage Biological & Experimental Films Collection

DVD-VIDEO starting 19.95$CONTENT ADVISORY: These films are rare, unedited, scientific, educational films that were used to teach doctors, scientists and college students in the field of human biology during the 1920's, 30's and 40's. Taken out of context, the explicit experimentation footage shown in many of these films may be disturbing to viewers who aren't in the field of biology. If you don't appreciate or understand the historical significance assigned to controversial medicinal films like these by the scientific community, please do not buy this DVD.

Revival of Organisms

Shocking experimentation film that duped the Medical community and made the front page of The New York Times. This disturbing film was presented to the medical world back in 1940 and basically sent shock waves throughout the scientific community. The film claims to record successful experiments in the resurrection of dead animals, as conducted by esteemed Dr. of Medical Science, S.S. Bryukhonenko from the Institute of Experimental Physiology and Therapy in Russia. Bryukhonenko shares the credit for performing the first successful human blood transfusion so he was a well known, highly regarded, figure in the field of Human Biology prior to this films release.

According to the New York Times, these experiments were hailed by American biologists as a "promising a new epoch in medical science, bringing closer the day when operations now incompatible with life will be possible'." Although the overall claim of the film (that you can bring a dead animal back to life) was exposed as a hoax decades later, the jury is still when it comes to the authenticity of the experiments shown in this film. Graphic scenes showing the replacement of a dogs circulatory system to keep it's vital organs and nervous system alive are truly "Frankenstein-ien" in nature but Professor J.B.S. Haldane, who would later become world renowned for his genetic research, provides the introduction for this film and claims to have witnessed many of these experiments himself. This film is not for the squeamish or faint of heart.

A Rare Piece of Controversial Medical History!

PLUS! THESE (2) *RARE* HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY FILMS...

Early Biology BreakthroughEarly Blood Identification

Development of Salamanders

Produced during the 1920's by the Department of Biology at Yale University, this film documents the first scientific use of time lapse photography to record the segmented stages throughout the early development of a growing organism.

Approx: Run Time: 14:38 Minutes Format: NTSC DVD, B/W, Silent

Precipitins

Created in 1930 by Cinema Biologist Chas.F. Herm, this film documents the earliest scientific methods used to identify the origin of blood cells through the use of rabbits to determine if a sample of blood can be identified as human or animal through the production of anti-bodies.

Approx: Run Time: 08:34 Minutes Format: NTSC DVD, B/W, Silent

...AND THESE (3) CLASSIC *CLASSROOM* FILMS

In the Beginning

The Genesis of Mammalian Life This film investigates the origins of life through the use of rabbit dissection, diagrams and animation. Excellent footage containing many close ups of female reproductive organs, sperm cells, fertilized eggs and microscopic cell division. Mitosis is particularly well documented through the use of time-lapse photomicrography.

CONTENT ADVISORY: Explicit animal dissection and experimentation scenes.

Created: 1935
Producer: U.S. Department of Agriculture
Format: NTSC DVD, B&W, w/SND
Run Time: 15:42 Minutes

Heart and Circulation

Early "how-to" dissection and experimentation film. This rare early film explains how the heart, veins and arteries work through the use of animation, animal dissection (dog, turtle, rabbit) and matter-of-fact narration. Shown in classrooms throughout the 1940's, 50's and 60's all over the United States for decades. Although some scenes might make the casual viewer a bit queasy, this film does a good job of explaining the structure and function of the human heart and circulatory system. Also contains excellent early footage of microscopic blood cells in action.

CONTENT ADVISORY: Explicit animal dissection and experimentation scenes.

Created: 1955
Producer: Donald Laird, Colgate U.
Format: NTSC DVD
Run Time: 10:28 Minutes

The Atom and Biological Science

The "new" use of radiation to improve health and cure disease. This film starts out with a quick explanation of what radiation, gamma rays and isotopes are and then describes the effects high doses of radiation have on plant and animal cells. It continues on to an explanation of how geneticists use gamma rays to accelerate the division of single cell organisms, define heredity traits through genes, and as a potential treatment for cancerous tumors. Although the creators of this film touch on the extreme caution taken to protect researchers from the harmful effects of mishandling radioactive material, it doesn't appear that the lab technicians conducting some of these experiments were listening.

CONTENT ADVISORY: Experimentation using rats.

Created: 1952
Producer: EBI Films.
Format: NTSC DVD, B&W, w/SND
Run Time: 11:34 Minutes
